The Lead Pastor is responsible for working with the Elder Board and Ministry Team to cast vision and lead East Bend Mennonite Church. The position is full-time, and salary is commensurate to responsibilities with consideration given to applicant's experience, education, and previous effectiveness. The position is accountable to the Elder Board.
East Bend Mennonite’s mission is to develop and send forth disciples of Jesus Christ that will transform our world. They are an Anabaptist community church that teaches, shares and does life together centered on Jesus. The church is Biblically-grounded, intimate, authentic, and engaged. East Bend Mennonite is a place for real friendship, service, making a difference in our community and helping people flourish. As followers of Jesus, this fellowship of believers is empowered by the Holy Spirit to be the hands of Jesus to their neighbors.
East Bend Mennonite has an average weekly attendance of around 100, and an annual operating budget of $180,000. It has its own building on 3 acres of land near Fisher, northwest of Champaign, Illinois. Fisher is a small town that is growing, attracting families because of its excellent school system. Champaign is home to the University of Illinois and is a medical hub in central Illinois. Champaign County has a population of 200,000 people.
The qualified candidate will be a leader who passionately loves God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength, and loves and cares for their neighbors in ways that will draw them into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ.
A qualified candidate will:
Maintain a consistent devotional life of prayer and Bible study and have an understanding of God’s word, discerning with wisdom and guarding against false teaching.
Demonstrate the evidence of both the fruit and gifts of the Holy Spirit. (Galatians 5:22-23, 1 Corinthians 12:7-11).
Have evidence of God's call on their life and meet the qualifications of an elder given in 1 Timothy 3:1-13, Titus 1:6-9 and 1 Peter 5:2-3.
Embody observable Christ-like behavior and humility with family, friends, and community.
Possess a personal desire and history of fulfilling Jesus' Great Commission.
Experience and Education
A qualified candidate will have:
Pastoral leadership experience, some theological education preferred.
Knowledge of Biblical Anabaptist theology and a willingness to commit to Evana Network's covenant.
Some training and background in leading and empowering teams.
A qualified candidate must be a team builder who is:
A strong leader who models, equips, and inspires others to do the work of ministry (Ephesians 4).
Able to clearly communicate a compelling vision of ministry for the church.
Able to lead an inter-generational discipleship movement in the church that empowers and mobilizes the church to fulfill its calling as the body of Christ.
Provide spiritual leadership to the church that equips people for fulfillment of the Great Commission.
Serve as primary communicator on weekend services.
Preach Biblical and dynamic sermons that draw people into intimacy with Christ and His redemptive mission in the world.
Ensure inter-generational discipleship of individuals and families.
Develop and mentor new leaders.
Provide administrative leadership to the ministry team.
Be accountable to the Elder Board.
Provide support and oversight to all ministries and their leaders.
